Life is made by the choices we make. How do we ensure that we´re on the right track in times of decision making?
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. ~ James 1:5-6
The woman was a familiar face. People who traveled often saw her peddling vegetables from a cart along country roads. On one occasion a motorist noticed her throwing a stick in the air at an intersection and asked her, “Why are you tossing the stick up like that?” “I´m trying to decide which road to take”, she answered as she continued to toss the stick.
“How many times do you have to throw the stick to decide?”
The woman stopped, turned towards the motorist, and said, until it points to the way I want to go.
Funny how this story relates exactly to the way we pray to God when we need help in making decisions. We ask Him to guide us, but the moment we notice that He´s leading us to the direction that we´re not comfortable to go, we ask Him yet one more time to guide us, and help us, until He´ll hopefully give in to where we want to go.
My husband and I are currently in a time of crucial decision. It´s both confusing and scary.
We want to buy either a small house or an apartment. The requirements are: 1) it needs to be within our budget, 2) it should be within the perimeter of the city where we´ll have easy access to things and it´s not far from where my husband works, and 3) it must be big enough for a family with a baby.
The problem is there´s currently a housing boom in our city. The city is rapidly growing and it´s expanding in a blink of an eye. It has totally changed a lot in a matter of five years since I moved to Germany. Add to that the influx of refugees, many people need a place to live.
New apartment buildings are sprouting. Many people are looking to buy a property. Housing cost have doubled. Apartment rentals are expensive. And for us, we feel that instead of paying for an expensive monthly rental, we better buy a small but comfortable place.
And yet, there aren´t enough options. It´s either a project that we love but way too far from the city, a project that´s new and modern but way out of our budget, or a space that fits the first two of our requirements but is rather too small for the preference of my husband.
There was one apartment that was so good and something we almost could afford but got snatched even before we could make a decision.
Now I don´t have a problem living in a tiny space. I´ve lived most of my life in rental apartments in big cities and had no problem adjusting to small living spaces. But not my husband. He needs a bigger space.
We were still waiting and praying for God´s guidance when out of nowhere an apartment just beside my husband`s office became available on the market. It´s small, but at an awesome location and within our budget. It´s really cost effective.
I tried to persuade my husband to go for this one, but he´s adamant that he can´t live in a small space for the rest of his life. For me, however, I found it to be God´s answered prayer. The only problem is, we´ll be forced to live a minimalist lifestyle. Living minimal while not burdened with a huge mortgage is more attractive to me.
Minimalism is something I have wanted to do for the past few years now yet didn´t have the courage to start. I`m always tempted to consume. Wouldn´t it be nice if our small living space will force us to consume less?
Now God has a funny way of showing us where He´s leading us. The bigger apartment outside the city that my husband likes was recently sold. The new apartment project in the middle of the area that we want to live is priced beyond our budget. But the tiny apartment just beside my husband`s office is still available.
With more persuading, my husband finally considered the idea. And tomorrow, we´re going to see the broker.
I`m still praying for this one, we may or may not get it, but the bottom-line of the story is, whenever we´re confused and scared to make a decision, we only have to ask God for guidance and He´ll show us the way.
How would we know which one is God´s answer? If it´s simpler, not complicated, and not stressful. If it makes us feel at peace, and if life´s series of events are leading us towards it. Remember, God will be the One to prepare the way for us.
Are you currently at a crossroad? Ask God for guidance. Believe and not doubt.
